Cyber Safety
Educators apply strategies for fostering online safety, privacy and security in support of student learning.
Topics Include:
- Identity theft, protecting personal safety, and safeguarding privacy
- Cyber bullying, pornography, and disruptive student websites
- Filters, virus protection, and password security
- At-risk student warning signals, and efficacy of “scare tactics”
- Social networking, collaborating, and communicating online
Upon completion of this workshop you will be equipped with strategies fostering online safety, privacy and security in support of student learning in a technology enhanced environment. You will be able be to:
- analyze issues related to a variety of cyber safety topics as they relate to safe schools;
- describe strategies for protecting private identify information online;
- identify basic components of good cyber security including protecting against viruses and secure password strategies;
- teach a lesson on the topic of Internet safety or security to students or present similarly to an adult audience.
Questions to explore include:
- What is the best response to cyberbullying? Disruptive student websites? Blogs?
- Do "scare tactics" work to achieve safe online behavior?
- How is online safety managed in a tele-collaborative project?
- What predisposes a child to risks online?
- Is our Acceptable Use Policy sufficient protection?
- Is it ever OK to allow students to provide personal information to a web site?
- What makes a passwords safe and secure?
- Can I trust filtering software? Virus protection?
